Nenana is a very diverse community with a lot of interesting things to see. Nenana is one of the only authentic Athabascan village's on the road system, and it is on a river, with all it's river sites to see. The train bridge is the second longest single span bridge in the world and president Harding drove the memorable gold spike at the end of the railroad here. Many people travel through here in the summer and never see what we are like in the winter, 8 months of the year. A picture is worth a thousand words, so the village has put these pictures together for you to learn about us. We hope you enjoy them!
In the spring of 2005 (above) Nenana opened the 'Wayne Walters' ice skating rink. Here is a picture of Wayne and his wife Tina at the ribbon cutting. A somewhat historic event the community is proud of because this is a project funded entirely on local money and donated time and materials gives the Nenana kids a chance to play hockey and compete against other villages.
Nenana has many gifted artists and is a good place to find Athabascan beadwork
The Yukon 800 goes right by Nenana -an amazing 800 mile race between Fairbanks and the village of Galena.
Lots of bird life around Nenana. Left- a pair of Trumpeter swans is common to see. This pair nests within city limits.
Right-- a local (secret) fishing hole
Here is the rink all done and being fine tuned!
We proudly put a sign up where the snow machine races take place! The city and Native council donated use of equipment, school donated fuel and about every group in town helped in one way or other!
In Sept of 05 above Nenana Mental health put on a sobriety parade in honor or National Sobriety month
Above. Nenana has a fairly new 'Student Living Center'. This is a place offering remote village kids and home school homesteader children a chance to go to high school. They stay here while going to our school. Nenana is very proud of the quality of education and help this has been to the kids. Here some living center kids are loading a old furnace on a 4 wheeler cart as part of a after school entertainment program - a scavenger hunt type situation to see who can come up with the largest coolest oddest item donated and traded for a previous collected object. There is a time limit! Go kids go! This one didn't win though--rats!
We hope you have enjoyed pictures from around our community. Please check back! We will change the pictures regularly! Hope to see you here!
